Weeds star Justin Kirk returns to Broadway in Jon Robin Baitz’s Other Desert Cities on January 10, starring as Trip Wyeth. Kirk joins a cast that includes Stockard Channing, Rachel Griffiths, Stacy Keach and Judith Light. Directed by Joe Mantello, Other Desert Cities is currently running at the Booth Theatre.
Kirk is an Obie Award winner for his performance in Terrence McNally’s Love! Valour! Compassion!, in which he also starred on Broadway. He won a Lucille Lortel Award for Baitz’s Ten Unknowns at Lincoln Center Theater and has appeared on the New York stage in The Understudy, The World Over, Any Given Day, Old Wicked Songs and June Moon. Kirk is known to TV audiences as Andy Botwin on Weeds and received an Emmy nomination for his performance as Prior Walter in the HBO adaptation of Tony Kushner's Angels in America. He has a recurring role on the ABC comedy hit Modern Family.
In Other Desert Cities, once-promising novelist Brooke Wyeth (Griffiths) returns home after a six-year absence to celebrate Christmas in Palm Springs with her parents (Channing and Keach), former members of the Reagan inner-circle, her brother (Kirk) and her aunt (Light). When Brooke announces that she is about to publish a memoir focusing on an explosive chapter in the family’s history, the holiday reunion is thrown into turmoil.
Other Desert Cities opened on Broadway on November 2, 2011. The show enjoyed a sold-out run off-Broadway at Lincoln Center earlier in 2011. Kirk is replacing actor Thomas Sadoski, who originated the role of Trip Wyeth in both productions.
